Defeating an Unknown Epidemic
The Bad
News - Anatomy of an Epidemic
1. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. In
2010, over 217,000 men were newly diagnosed with prostate
cancer every year - one man every 2.41 minutes.
2. 32,050 men were projected to die from prostate cancer in
2010 - one man every 17.1 minutes. This represents an
increase of 14% over 2009.
3. Only half of at risk men test annually, and most men
that do test do not personally know or track their PSA
value, or how it may be changing from one year to the next.
The Good
News - What Men Can Do
1. Research shows that prostate cancer is very treatable if
discovered early, before it has metastasized.
2. A simple PSA blood test allows for the early detection
of prostate cancer.
3. The American Cancer Society’s research shows that a
third of all cancers are lifestyle related.
Prostate
Cancer Awareness Project Mission
1. Ensure that every man over 35 measures and personally
tracks his PSA value annually.
2. Create a nationwide series of Black Tire Affair® events
that will raise prostate cancer awareness and provide a
vehicle for ongoing exercise and nutrition improvement
programs and, ultimately, prostate cancer prevention.
